Greetings Connect
A 3-sentence-fic collab with @bellecream for @zelinkcommunity Zelink Week 2023 day 6: in another life.
----
“Greetings Connect,” Link read aloud, the first two words in the modern translation of an ancient copy of a series of other ancient copies of a book so old its title had been lost—the scholars claimed it held little but gibberish (it had ‘nonsensical sentence structure,’ they said), but he and Zelda needed to understand the Triforce; the older the text, the closer to the ancient artefact enshrined, invisible, within Link’s soul.
The intense stare Zelda turned on those words sent Link reaching for the copy written in dead-and-buried language, Zelda’s hand overtaking his to find the beginning with quiet fervor—then a paling, stilled shock, her eyes fixed on it; Link’s couldn’t help but follow, and with the first catch of the ancient symbols in his vision a ringing like a hammer-strike permeated his sword, a vertigo of understanding emerging from it: “Hello, Link,” the book said—“it’s me, Zelda.”
“I miss you so much it’s excruciating, even though it’s been three months,” (Zelda’s hand curled tight around his forearm), “but I have faith this book will find you in another life-“ Link’s eyes snapped to Zelda’s; “How- I can read it- it’s you,” he said, his wife, his Princess, nodding, ghostlike, her eyes opening in a disoriented transparency like nothing he’d ever seen in her.

Linktober day 11: rollin’ inn
After a day fighting a volcano, the heroic group stumble back to the inn to take a Long Rest. Unfortunately for Link, his sleep is interrupted by mournful ghosts partying it up in his brain.
(Mineru and rauru were the last of their kind ever since the already small insular zonai kingdom was decimated by a strange, flesh bending plague. A lone miner found the two children, and decided to take them in despite concerns of the curse.
He raised them. When they asked him to help fight the source of their blood family’s extinction, who was he to say no?)
More about this totk au! (It all started when zelda did not get teleported into the past, and then spiraled from there)

And then between botw and totk, he still chooses to stay with Zelda. Whether you ship them or not, he canonically never left her side, and there's no debate that he's doing so willingly. Even after he saved the world and they're now in peaceful times, when his duty is finally done and he can just retire and move on, he instead chooses to continue to protect Zelda and help rebuild Hyrule.
So basically, no, he would not have chosen a different path
I am once again unhinged about botw cause of this line, this line
Tumblr media
is so important?? And I feel so stupid cause I've seen it 437194 times but only now I've just realised.
Link's story is literally all about taking a different path. He gets the chance at life again, but without people's oppressive expectations of how he should behave, or to be this perfect knight all the time. I loved link's character in botw because the contrast of how he was in the memories vs who he is in the present time makes me so happy. He's much more carefree and happy, willing to joke around, it's like seeing someone grow and heal and it's great.
So link was at last given this chance at a different path, in a world where people saw him as just another traveller. He could act however he wanted, if he wanted to he could've rejected his duty and go on as just an anonymous dude living life.
And yet, he didn't. He was given the chance to choose a different path - no memories of the past, but he chose to be a knight. It shows that some things endured across the 100 years and the amnesia. Even after all he went through, link is still willing to bear responsibility, has a sense of duty to his kingdom, and cares deeply about Zelda. I think that's pretty cool honestly.
